Capable of adjusting thermostats and light fittings, making calls, listening to music, or even placing orders for supplies, smart speakers are already pretty darn useful. Amazon's latest service is looking to add a further layer of versatility to its Alexa-enabled devices with the new Alexa Emergency Assist service. Essentially, a hands-free emergency response system, Emergency Assist is now available for $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year.

With Emergency Assist, users can contact emergency services by saying, “Alexa, call for help.” This is particularly useful for people with limited mobility, children without phone access, or any situation where a phone is inaccessible. The service will also inform users if smoke or carbon monoxide detectors are activated in their homes.

It’s important to note that Alexa Emergency Assist does not alert emergency services directly or connect users with 911 operators. Instead, users will be put in touch with a dedicated Urgent Response agent who will request an ambulance, fire department, or police if necessary. In addition to contacting services, Emergency Assist will notify your emergency contacts when you use the service. Emergency Assist customers can pre-save essential information such as allergies, pre-existing medical conditions, gate codes, and more, and the Urgent Response agent will relay those details to the first responders.
