Here at Reviewed, we’ve been fans of Ruggable for years—from outdoor rugs to bath mats. I’ve been using Ruggable rugs in my home for over five years now and find the rugs an ideal floor covering for families like mine with kids and pets, who want trendy (but easy-to-clean) floors.

I spent several months testing the 6-foot by 9-foot Ruggable Premium Medium Pile Rug (available at Ruggable) in my living room, which gets plenty of foot (and paw) traffic from my two kids, ages 5 and 10, and an English bulldog.

The Ruggable premium rug I have, due to its larger size and thickness, presented a bigger challenge when it came to washing, but there are still plenty of great qualities to consider if you need an ultra-soft machine-washable rug.

The Ruggable Premium Medium Pile Rug is made of tufted yarn and is three times thicker than the classic.

The Ruggable Classic style is a low-pile rug cover that measures about one-eighth of an inch thick. Because of its thinner size, it is lighter in weight and easier to wash. The Ruggable Premium Medium Pile Rug is made of tufted yarn and is three times thicker than the classic. Both are machine washable.

The classic and premium covers have a water- and stain-resistant protective layer and adhere to a Ruggable non-slip rug pad.

The classic style also has a different feel since the pile height is low (2 mm)—it's flat and smooth. On the contrary, the premium cover, which has a medium (7mm) pile height, offers an ultra-soft feel.

Another difference between the two styles is that these Ruggable rugs come in different sizes. The classic cover is available in more sizes ranging from 2-foot by 3-foot size up to a 9-foot by 12-foot size. It also comes in runners and 6-foot and 8-foot round options.

The premium rug shares some of the same sizes, from 2-foot by 3-foot to 6-foot by 9-foot, but it is not offered in an 8-by-10-foot or 9-by-12-foot option. It also only comes in one round size (6 feet).

What we like

It is noticeably thicker and softer than classic Ruggable rugs

The Ruggable premium rug cover is thicker than a traditional Ruggable rug cover. I have both in my house, and I can attest—the premium cover is much thicker underfoot.

Because of the increased thickness, it feels more durable. It also looks more like an actual rug and less like a thin, washable rug cover.

If you’re looking for a washable rug that doesn’t look like a washable rug, the premium style is a good choice.

There are ample designs to choose from

The medium pile rugs are also available in many of Ruggable's collaborations, like with Iris Apfel and Jonathan Adler.

One of the best things about Ruggable is that you can swap out the rug covers whenever you want. You can use the same rug pad, so all you need to buy is a new cover.

The premium rug cover is available in many designs and styles to match your décor, from traditional farmhouse to contemporary modern.

The rug cover keeps its color and quality after washing

Even after washing, the Premium cover looks as good as new. There are no loose strings or decline to the overall quality after washing, and the color doesn't fade. It still feels just as soft as when we got it, too.

What we don’t like

The larger sizes are hard to wash

The 6-foot by 9-foot Ruggable Premium Rug Cover overloaded my washer.

The whole point of Ruggable is that you can wash them in the washing machine, but my front load washing machine struggled to clean the 6-by-9-foot Ruggable premium rug.

Several times I got the "UE error" on the front of my washing machine—meaning the washer is unbalanced. I took the wet rug out and put it back in, hoping to rebalance things in the drum, but I continued to get the same message after several attempts.

After trying several “spin only” cycles on my washing machine, I gave up and transferred the rug to the dryer. Because it was still fairly wet, it took several hours for it to dry, eating up the bulk of my Sunday laundry day.

Additionally, a rug of this size and thickness is very heavy when wet. I’m pregnant with twins and found it to be a real workout taking the wet rug out and putting it back in the washer, and subsequently, transferring it to my front-load dryer.

The corners turn up after washing

Before I washed it, likely due to the heaviness and thickness of the rug, it laid flat without flipping.

After I washed the rug, some of the corners turned upward and I had to put down heavy coffee table books to get them flat again.

Should you buy the Ruggable premium rug?

Yes, but only in a small size

The Ruggable premium rug cover is noticeably thicker underfoot than a regular Ruggable rug cover. The rug is machine washable, making it a convenient choice for high-traffic areas in your home. The premium style is thick and soft and comes in multiple designs.

However, I don't recommend purchasing a premium rug cover larger than 5 feet by 7 feet if you have a standard front-loading washing machine like me.

The 6-by-9-foot size overwhelmed my washer, rendering it unable to complete the cycle. And, since it was still wet, it took hours to dry. The edges of the rug also curled up post-wash, so you will need to flatten them back down.

If you live with pets and kids, a washable rug, like Ruggable rugs, is a great way to have clean and stylish floors. Many washable rugs are flat, but the Ruggable premium rug cover is thick and soft underfoot.

If you need a larger size but aren’t sure you want to roll the dice on the premium cover, a regular Ruggable rugs cover, paired with one of a Ruggable cushioned rug pad, is a great alternative.
