If there was ever a perfect transition piece between your summer and fall wardrobes, it would be the blazer. By tossing one over your most beloved warmer weather pieces, not only can you extend the wear of your favorite summer staples, you can also add polish to most autumn outfits.

Blazers have had quite a style journey throughout the years, from Dior’s new look tailored jackets in the late 1940s to shrunken and boxy cuts thanks to Jackie O and Oleg Cassini in the ‘60s, from the suede and leather of the 1970s to the power suits and big shoulders that dominated the ‘80s. Today’s modern oversized silhouettes hit the comfy-chic combo out of the park.

“I love investing in a great blazer because of its versatility and the many ways in which you can wear it,” says Amanda Vargus, founding partner of Boston-based Wave + Woven Style House. Below, find some of our favorite ways to style an oversized blazer this fall.

Balance an oversized blazer with a bralette

Toss on one of these stylish blazers with a bralette to play with proportions.

When wearing an oversized blazer it’s important that it doesn’t wear you. Translation: Larger proportions can cause you to fully lose your shape, warns Vargus. To combat this issue she suggests styling an oversized blazer with matching trousers, if possible, and a tube top or bralette underneath to show off your waistline.

Size-inclusive brand Rebdolls takes a turn at the trend with its Essential Oversized Blazer. Part of a set with coordinating wide-leg pants, the collared coat is made from medium-weight fabric that doesn’t create bulk. The Old Navy Taylor Relaxed Suit Blazer is a fall-forward brown plaid single-breasted button jacket made from soft-washed twill that looks perfect when combined with the matching pants. Toss either of these blazers over a bandeau for a complete look.

Shop the Essential Oversized Blazer by Rebdolls in women’s sizes S to 5X in four colors, and the Taylor Relaxed Suit Blazer from Old Navy in women’s sizes XS to 4X in regular, tall and petite.

Opt for an oversized belt to accent your silhouette

Accentuate your silhouette with a belt.

If showing some skin under your blazer isn’t your vibe, rely on a common accessory to help create a waist despite all that fabric. “I love a thick leather belt [over an oversized blazer], which feels reminiscent of the ‘80s, or a classic skinny belt,” says Vargus.

The extra oversized fit of Forever 21’s Oversized Peak-Lapel Blazer is the perfect silhouette for nipping in at the waist. This woven blazer features details like peak lapels, dual button-front closures, front flap pockets, and a chest welt pocket that will create balance once you cinch the belt around.

Having trouble with belt placement? The Blvck Oversize Blazer is a no-brainer with signature snake hardware that secures right where you need it for an hourglass shape. The design looks effortless for a stylish night out.

Keep it casual with jeans and a white tank

Style your blazer with jeans and a tank for an easy off-duty vibe.

For an effortless look, wear your oversized blazer a la Sofia Richie with a white ribbed tank and wide-cut jeans, and drape your blazer over your shoulders.

Somewhere between a blazer and last year’s shacket, Splendid’s Ricki Plaid Blazer has just the right oversized fit that’s controlled with a few front buttons. Pair the piece with your favorite jeans and a fresh tank and you’ve accomplished a great off-duty look. If you want to be a bit more tailored without losing the oversized trend, go with the classic Jones New York Notch Collar Blazer—a step up from the typical oversized slouch with its notched collar.

Shop the Ricki Plaid Blazer from Splendid in women’s sizes XS to XL, and the Notch Collar Rolled Cuff Bi-Stretch Blazer by Jones New York in women’s sizes XS to XL in five colors.

Find a balance between masculine and feminine by adding biker shorts

Add a split dress or a pair of biker shorts can add an edge to any blazer look.

Mixing masculine with feminine pieces has always been a key takeaway for elevated style. However, thanks to the oversized nature, Vargus says this trend lends itself to an even more masculine feel that needs to be tamed. It’s important to balance that vibe by wearing it over a more feminine base like a lace cami or silky slip dress.

Better yet: Make the blazer the dress itself. “If your blazer is quite oversized, I love styling it as a mini dress,” she continues. Rock biker shorts underneath or try opaque tights as the temps drop, so you feel covered on the bottom.

A casual-smart addition to your closet, the Relaxed Blazer in Softdrape by Madewell has a cool wrap front detail and easy drop shoulders that boast low-key shoulder pads. Also smart? Its Tencel modal fibers are derived from sustainable wood sources using renewable energy and recycled chemicals.

The lightweight fabric of Express’s Oversized Boyfriend Blazer also is a perfect topper for a slimmed-down illusion when worn on its own over a pair of biker shorts. The double-breasted front and padded shoulders elongate your look.

Shop the Relaxed Blazer in Softdrape by Madewell in women’s sizes XXS to XXL in petite, plus, and standard, and the Oversized Boyfriend Blazer from Express in women’s sizes XS to XL in three colors.
