About the Stearns and Foster Lux Estate Pillow Top

Stearns and Foster makes a variety of mattresses, including traditional pocket springs, hybrid, and memory foam. We tested the Lux Estate Pillow Top, an innerspring mattress with a memory foam top layer for pressure relief and a cooling cover to prevent overheating.

We tested this mattress with a medium-firm pillow top, but you can select from soft, medium, or firm options. Without the pillow top, it comes in a standard medium firmness.

The Lux Estate comes in sizes from Twin Long to California King. Split King and Split California King options are also available should you want to adjust your head and foot positions independently from your sleep partner. The Queen mattress we tested weighs 146 pounds and measures 16 inches thick.

Due to its innerspring design, the Lux Estate isn’t a “mattress in a box” that you unbox yourself. Instead, Stearns and Foster offer free in-home delivery, which includes setup in your room of choice plus removal of your old mattress and box spring, if requested.

How much does the Stearns and Foster Lux Estate Pillow Top cost?

One of the most expensive mattresses we’ve tested, a Queen-sized Lux Estate with a medium pillow top costs $3,599, though the soft and firm options cost $3,299. The MSRP starts at $3,199 for a Twin Long while a King costs $3,899. Prices vary depending on the pillow top option you select.

The Lux Estate Pillow Top performed well in our lab tests.

We combine lab testing for objective features like motion transfer, edge support, and heat retention with a subjective evaluation of how much we enjoyed actually lying on the mattress. Once we’ve completed testing, we score each mattress in a spreadsheet and see how they rank. You can read more about our testing process in our full roundup of the best mattresses right now.

What we like about the Stearns and Foster Lux Estate Pillow Top

It’s comfortable and customizable

The Lux Estate's customizable pillow top offers top-notch comfort.

Pressure relief is vital to avoid painful pressure points from too much or insufficient support—if you’ve ever woken up with a sore back or shoulder, you know the feeling. Whether you’re a side, back, or stomach sleeper, having the right balance of support and cushion will protect your joints and allow you to get a good night’s rest.

We think the medium-firm pillow top is exceptionally comfy for multiple sleep positions, and in our tests, it offered excellent pressure point relief. According to Stearns and Foster, the innerspring technology relieves pressure, while the top-level cushioning provides extra comfort. Additionally, having the option to customize your Lux Estate mattress with a soft, medium, or firm memory foam pillow top makes it a great choice for any type of sleeper.

It keeps you cool overnight

Hot sleepers will love the Lux Estate's cooling system.

Sleepers who run warm at night will appreciate the cooling abilities of this mattress. In our tests, the Lux Estate Pillow Top diffused heat exceptionally well. It uses a ventilated coil system with external air vents to help keep you cool throughout the night, and based on our experience, it works wonders.

It offers excellent edge support

The Lux Estate's edge support makes it a great choice for those who sleep toward the side of the bed.

Edge support, or the stability of the perimeter of your mattress, is an essential factor for anyone who sleeps towards one side of their bed or has trouble getting in and out of bed. Overall, good edge support helps your mattress hold its shape over time, allows you to sleep towards the sides of your mattress without feeling like you’re going to roll off, and makes it more comfortable to sit on the edge of your bed.

In our tests, the Lux Estate Pillow Top performed exceptionally well. It offers excellent edge support that makes it easy to get in and out of bed and comfortable to sleep towards the side of the mattress.

What we don’t like about the Stearns and Foster Lux Estate Pillow Top

It’s difficult to get onto the frame

You'll want to take advantage of Stearns and Foster's white glove delivery.

While innerspring mattresses have their benefits, like better heat displacement, they’re also often more difficult to ship and unpack. We found the Stearns and Foster Lux Estate Pillow Top to be no exception. It was one of the most challenging mattresses to set up in the frame, though Stearns and Foster offers free white glove delivery, which includes setting up your new mattress and removing your old one.

Its trial period is subpar

Don't sleep on it too long—Stearns and Foster's 90-day trial period is shorter than many competitors.

At 90 days, Stearns and Foster’s mattress trial period is shorter than other brands we’ve tested. Most companies offer at least a 100-day trial, with many giving you up to 365 days to make a return. Additionally, if you’re unsatisfied with your purchase, you won’t get the shipping costs back.

What other people are saying

Reviewers love how comfortable the Lux Estate is.

The Lux Estate has an average of 4.5 stars on Stearns and Foster’s website, with many reviewers praising how comfortable this mattress is.

“This is my second Stearns and Foster mattress. I only bought the new one because we wanted to upgrade to a King from a Queen size,” one reviewer says. “My six-year-old Queen was still holding strong! My husband and I are Stearns and Foster customers for life! No other mattress brand is more comfortable.”

The primary complaint reviewers have is about the mattress’s weight and having difficulty maneuvering it.

“The mattress is comfortable enough, but extremely heavy,” one reviewer says. “It is most difficult to lift while placing a fitted mattress protector and fitted sheet. I wish I would have been appraised of this in the store. It is not practical for anyone with ordinary strength. I noticed the delivery men even had difficulty lifting it to remove the plastic covering.”

Warranty

Stearns and Foster offers a 10-year limited warranty.

Stearns and Foster has a 90-day trial period, during which you can return your mattress for a refund, minus the cost of shipping. As previously mentioned, this trial period is shorter than many other brands, so take note if you’re unsure about your purchase. The brand asks that you spend 30 days on your mattress before filing for a return—sound advice, in our experience. If you do make a return, you will be responsible for the cost of shipping.

Stearns and Foster has a 10-year limited warranty that covers structural damage, broken components, squeaks or rattles, and sagging, so long as your mattress was used properly. This means your mattress was used on an appropriate bed frame and was used for its primary purpose, sleeping. Damage like burns, cuts, or tears aren’t covered.

You may be subject to a fee when filing your claim, so check your policy details when registering your mattress.

Should you buy the Stearns and Foster Lux Estate Pillow Top?

Upgrade your bedroom with the Lux Estate Pillow Top—you won't be disappointed.

Yes, if you want to upgrade, it’s worth the price

The Lux Estate Pillow Top may be the most expensive mattress we tested, but its pros make it a worthy upgrade. It should be comfortable for any sleeper, keeps cool throughout the night, and has excellent edge support. Additionally, the fact that you can choose from a soft, medium, or firm pillow top to suit your preference is a nice bonus that some mattresses don’t offer.

The downside to this mattress is that it’s heavy and difficult to maneuver, like all innerspring mattresses. But the comfort this mattress provides and the quality of sleep you’ll get with it makes it well worth it.

If you can’t justify spending quite this much on a mattress, there are more affordable options for you to consider. The Leesa Sapira Hybrid mattress is our top choice for its outstanding pressure relief, cooling abilities, and motion isolation. It’s an excellent choice for all types of sleepers—and you won’t find a better mattress at this price.
