It’s hard to think about summer coming to an end in a month, but there is one good thing about it that we can all agree on: the return of the iconic pumpkin spice latte that many have come to associate with the beginning of fall. While fall doesn't officially start until late September, popular coffee shops have heard the cries of “PSL” enjoyers everywhere and have begun to roll out their offerings well in advance. Here's everything you need to know about the return of the pumpkin spice latte, from what it is, where and when you can buy it, and how you can enjoy it at home, too.

When does pumpkin spice start 2023 Starbucks?

PSA: The beloved PSL is finally back at Starbucks starting today, August 24th. For the twentieth anniversary of the flavor at Starbucks, it will be featured in several new drinks including an Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai Tea Latte. At Starbucks Reserve locations, customers can enjoy the Pumpkin Spice Whiskey Barrel-Aged Iced Latte and the Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini.

When does pumpkin spice start 2023 Dunkin'?

Dunkin' reintroduced its fall lineup last week on August 16. In addition to the Pumpkin Spice Signature Latte, Dunkin' fans will be able to sip Nutty Pumpkin Coffee and Pumpkin Swirl this season. Those who want something to snack on can also enjoy Goldfish® Dunkin’™ Pumpkin Spice Grahams starting September 1.

When are other stores selling pumpkin spice?

  • 7-Eleven re-introduced pumpkin spice lattes to its stores on August 1, the earliest date the store has offered it so far.

  • One of the nation’s most delicious doughnut stores, Krispy Kreme, began offering two pumpkin-themed products on August 7, in addition to two new ones: the Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Swirl Doughnut and the Pumpkin Spice Maple Pecan Doughnut.

  • IHOP will allow customers to order pumpkin-spiced pancakes, as well as pumpkin spice cold brew beginning on August 28.

What is pumpkin spice, exactly?

Pumpkin pie spice, more commonly referred to as just "pumpkin spice" in the context of the latte, has existed as part of American cuisine for hundreds of years—it was mentioned in American Cookery, the first cookbook written by an American, in 1796. Starting in 1933, several spice companies launched premade versions of pumpkin pie spice, making it more widely available and standardizing the taste. McCormick’s popular blend contains cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and all-spice. Pumpkin spice doesn't actually contain pumpkin, as it's meant to go in pumpkin pie.

Pumpkin pie spice's current “moment” started in 2003 when Starbucks introduced the pumpkin spice latte. Today, the flavor can be found in all sorts of products, from hot cocoa to home scents.
